There have been many historic sporting events that have taken place in New York City. Many Championship battles and fights from Madison Square Garden to Yankee Stadium. On Friday May 2nd, 2025, another memorable night took place. Boxing took center stage setting up the squared circle right on the infamous Times Square. A night of boxing like never seen before, under the lights of the concrete jungle with many of the top stars in Boxing competing.
The Central Valley’s own Jose Ramirez made the trip back to the big apple, no stranger to the area. Ramirez won the WBC lightweight title back in 2018 at Madison Square Garden. This time looking to get back on track, Ramirez took on Devin Haney in the co main event of the night. On a card that was headlined by Ryan Garcia taking on Rolly Romero. Part of a two night event on DAZN, Fatal Fury in Times Square kicked off what many consider the Cinco De Mayo weekend. Leading up to Canelo Alvarez vs William Scull taking place on May 3rd.
Fighters would make their entrances to the ring in vehicles, but not just any uber car. The Batmobile, classics, and lowriders cruised down Times Square where they dropped off the competitor’s ring side. Into a one of a kind makeshift arena, that was filled with many celebrities wanting to see how this extraordinary event played out.
As for the fight, Jose Ramirez came forward looking to engage. While Haney fought going backwards for the most part, landing a punch here and there as he got out of harm’s way. While Ramirez always came forward, he didn’t throw many punches until round 10 where he laned a right hand that seemed to hurt Haney. Ramirez attacked more often while chasing Haney in round’s eleven and twelve, letting loose with more punches when he did catch up to Haney’s back pedaling. The fight would go the distance where judges scored the fight (119-109, 119-109, 118-110), a unanimous decision for Devin Haney.
This is the second loss in a row for Ramirez who has traveled many miles in his last two fights. With the Central Valley native now back at the drawing board, perhaps a fight back home could help launch the comeback for Jose Ramirez. Either way, the Valley will be here ready to support Ramirez in his next move.
