Valley Fight Series the new home to the women's heavyweight division?

The Combat world is still buzzing over the action brought to the cage in the co main event of Valley Fight Series 13. The Central Valley based MMA promotion hosted their first pro/am show on Saturday November 4th, 2023 from the Table Mountain Casino in Fresno, Ca.

Jordan Urbano and the VFS crew welcomed back the women's MMA heavyweight division to the United States for the first time in a long time. The bout between Fresno's Destanie Yarbrough and Brittney Spinks was announced months prior to the event, with MMA fans excited to hear the news. Many expected an all out brawl, maybe with a quick finish in the match up. What we got instead was a display of technique and power by two of the best female heavyweights in the world. The fight delivered in all aspects, it was competitive and entertaining with evenly matched opponents. That's usually the perfect recipe for a great fight, but the spice Spinks and Yarbrough added to the event definitely "hit different" like the promotion likes to say.

Spinks vs Yarbrough took place in a woman's division that is hard to find fights in for these ladies. Following the war between the two that many considered the fight of the night. Other women from the division have made it clear that they want in, and have been waiting for a promotion to pull the trigger on adding the weight class. VFS has answered the call and the MMA community has taken notice. Fellow female fighters had taken to social media following the event. Letting the MMA world know that we need more of this kind of action, and a lot more often.

BJJ Black belt and popular female heavyweight Gabi Garcia has also tossed her name in the hat, Hoping to compete on the next Valley Fight Series card. Garcia went (6-0-1) in MMA before hanging up the gloves in 2018. She is a product of Japan's Rizin Fighting Federation, where she took on a familiar name in Destanie Yarbrough in 2016. Garcia spoke to @wmmarankings on IG regarding the return of her weight class saying,

"Amazing fight, Destanie has been training hard, it's been a long time since I fought her. I'm ready any time if they want me to fight. I know how much I sell and the numbers I bring to any match. I'm here."

Fresno's Destanie Yarbrough also spoke with @wmmrankings on IG letting them know her plan. While she does plan to stay active, she is also looking to make the move to the women's 185 lb division in February at VFS 14.

Also ready to get right back to business is Brittney Spinks, who let the promotion know she will be ready for February as well. Weather it is a rematch with Yarbrough or to take on Gabi Garcia herself. Telling @wmmarankings on IG that,

"I'm willing to fight whoever, whenever. The goal has always been to face the champ, Gabi Garcia. I believe that match up would be amazing!"

It is safe to say that not only the Central Valley MMA fans, but the MMA world is excited to see more match ups in the division. Yarbrough vs Garcia 2? Spinks vs Garcia? Spinks vs Yarbrough 2? Yarbrough at middleweight versus newer competition lining up for a chance to compete? We shall see what Valley Fight Series has in store moving forward.

Valley Fight Series returns to the Table Mountain Casino for VFS 14 on Saturday February 24th, 2024. Tickets will be available soon.
