The Manuel Torrez Boxing Classic is named after the founding father of the Tulare Athletic Boxing Club. The amateur boxing tournament is a way to honor Manuel Torrez for all his hard work in the sport. The event is sanctioned by USA Boxing and hosted by the Tulare Athletic Boxing Club that is now ran by Manuel’s son, former Olympic boxer and current coach Richard Torrez. Also, the father and coach of undefeated pro heavyweight Richard Torrez Jr. Torrez Sr. has been in the sport for a long time and has a great afternoon of amateur boxing planned for the Central Valley fight fans.
“We have 60 boxers scheduled to come in from many different
gyms, including the famed Wild Card Boxing Club. Freddie Roach will not be in attendance,
but his team led by coach Manuel “Superman” Jimenez will be making their way to
Tulare.” Said Richard Torrez of the
upcoming event.
Juan“Superman” Jimenez is a long time boxing coach of more
than 26 years and has been the head of amateur boxing at Wild Card Boxing Club
since 2005. Athletes from the Valley and other areas will get a chance to test
their skills and gain the experience needed to succeed in the sport. 11-0 Richard
“Keke” Torrez will also be on hand supporting and helping at the event. Torrez Jr. started his boxing journey at this
very boxing classic as a youngster, so the Manuel Torrez Classic is the place
to be to see the new wave of young boxers.
The Richard Torrez Jr. Gymnasium is located on the campus of Mission Oak High School at 3442 E. Bardsley Ave Tulare, Ca 93274. Boxing fans will get to enjoy the action for $20 at the door with bouts beginning at 12pm noon.
