Urijah Faber’s A1 Combat was back at the Hard Rock Sacramento Saturday night June 22nd, 2023. Another great night of action as usual from one of top promotions in California. A1 Combat president Tom Anderson and the crew just get better and better at putting on entertaining shows. Jim Cooley put together a great all amateur MMA preliminary card that set the pace for the night. The promotion crowned their first amateur and women’s champion with the main card headlined by two pro title fights.
In the main event the A1 Combat Featherweight Championship was on the line as champion (6-1) Andrew Coyne out of Sacramento looked to defend his title versus undefeated (5-0) Ernie Juarez out of Stockton. Juarez brought the pressure in round one coming forward scoring with punches and kicks to the leg with Coyne looking to counter. Juarez continued to come forward in round two. Coyne did pick up the pace with his counter shots, landing a nice head kick that seemed to daze Juarez. Juarez came out of the corner chopping away at the leg of Coyne with hard kicks to start round three. Coyne feeling those kicks, would circle away but then shoot in and get a single leg takedown. With Coyne in top position, Juarez kept busy from the bottom landing elbows and shots that damaged Coyne as he looked to improve his top position. Juarez escaped as the round ended trying to score with punches with the time he had left. The fight went the distance and after three tough rounds judges scored the fight (29-28. 29-28, 30-27) a unanimous decision for Ernie "Young Titan" Juarez, who moves to 6-0 and is the new A1 Combat featherweight champion
The co main event would decide A1 Combat’s first ever women’s champion. (3-0) Taylor Mauldin took on (4-1) Laura Gallardo for the vacant A1 Combat woman’s strawweight championship. Following a tough first round, Gallardo would get the fight to the ground where she worked to improve her position. Maudlin threw her right leg under the neck of Gallardo trapping her in a gogoplata. Maudlin moved then moved to the even more impressive Inverted gogoplata that forced the tap at 3:13 round 2. Taylor Mauldin remains unbeaten and is the new A1 Combat women’s strawweight champion.
Ernesto Rodriguez defeats Troy Green by unanimous decision after three rounds of action. Judges scored the fight (30-25, 30-25, 30-26).
Billy Brand defeats Pedro Juarez by tko using some ground and pound that forced the referee to stop the fight at 4:25 in round 3.
Carlos Figueroa hands Ian Morken the first loss of his career. Figueroa landed a hard elbow that dropped Morken, a few more shots and Morken is out at just :36 seconds into round 1.
Sczar Charles defeats Joseph Keith by tko. Unfortunately a un seen illegal knee hurt Keith. Referee did not see it, Charles followed up with a few more shots and the ref steps in to stop the fight at in 2:57 in round 1.
Amateur Preliminary bouts:
Andrew Toste defeats Nicolas Colunga by submission to become the promotions first ever amateur champion. Toste locked in a triangle choke that forced the tap at 1:57 in round 3 making him the new A1 Combat amateur bantamweight champion.
Laquan Jenkins defeats Blace Proffer by unanimous decision, all three judges scored the fight (29-28).
Mason Hartshorn defeats Donald Todd by submission with a rear naked choke that forced the tap at 1:28 in round 3.
Dominic Hidalgo defeats Henry Ganzorig by unanimous decision, all three judges scored the fight (30-27).
Gabriel Marquez defeats Cristian Alba by tko at 1:39 in round 2.
Tavious Hunter defeats Derek Moon by unanimous decision all three judges scored the fight (29-28).
Ignacio Ureno defeats Juan De La Rosa by tko at 1:41 in round 2.
