Jose Ramirez vs Arnold Barboza Jr, Golden Boy: Latino Night –
Chris Esqueda/Golden Boy |
The Latino culture continues to be celebrated during Saudi Arabia’s Riyadh Season. The UFC held a Mexican theme event in their much anticipated event at Sphere Las Vegas titled, “Noche UFC” in September. The celebration has carried over into Saudi Arabia with Golden Boy Promotions: Latino Night.
The Venue in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia hosted Golden Boy: Latino Night in
a more private setting with not as many fans as usual. A theater type set up,
with the mariachi’s opening the show. The “Golden Boy” Oscar De La Hoya also
dressed the part, in full mariachi suit himself. The night would see a list of
some of the top Latino boxers make the trip to compete on a very competitive
card. Headlined by a match up that would unify the WBA, WBO, and Ring Magazine
Cruiserweight titles.
Former world champion Jose Ramirez out of Avenal took on
Arnold Barboza Jr in the co main event of the night. In a fight that has been
talked about for years, we would now get our answer to who would win? The two
trained together for some time and with both fighters in the same weight class.
The fight was avoided for as long as it could be. With Ramirez and Barboza Jr. both
a fight away from a title shot. The only way to decide who is next is by facing
each other in the ring. Fighters were in
the ring a bit after lunch in the U.S, with the fight getting started just
after 1 pm PT. Golden Boy: Latino Night was streamed live and free on DAZN.
Ramirez pushed the pace early in the fight, following Barboza
Jr to the ropes where Ramirez would land a nice right hand in round 2. Barboza
used great footwork to keep his back off the ropes and looked to score as the
rounds came closer to an end. Barboza Jr. began to land with counter shots while
getting out of danger with his footwork with Ramirez still coming forward, but
not landing much. Ramirez was more aggressive in rounds 4 and 5, cornering
Barboza Jr and unloading with some hard punches and a few clean right hands.
Barboza Jr. seemed to have figured it out midway through the fight. Timing Ramirez’s forward movement and landing some nice combos while moving backwards. That didn’t stop Ramirez from charging in and scoring again in round 7 as the scheduled ten rounder moved to the later rounds. Ramirez continued to try and close the distance and force some exchanges, while Barboza Jr, kept scoring with the stiffer punches as he countered and got out of the way. The fight would go the distance, and the judges scored the fight (97-93, 96-94, 96-94) a unanimous decision for Arnold Barboza Jr who remains undefeated and may be next in line for a title fight.
Jose Ramirez now stands at 29-2 following only the second loss in his career, and will look to bounce back in 2025.
The main event saw Gilbert "Zurdo" Ramirez unify the WBO and WBA Cruiserweight titles with a unanimous decision win over Chris Billiam-Smith. Judges scored the fight (116-112, 116-113, 116-112).
In other bouts:
William Zepeda defeats Tevin Farmer by split decision,
judges scored the fight (95-94, 94-95, 95-94).
Oscar Collazo defeats KO CP Freshmart by knockout at 1:29 in
round 7 to become the WBO and WBA Minimumweight Champion.
Oscar Duarte defeats Botirzhon Akhmedov by unanimous
decision, judges scored the fight (98-92, 97-93, 96-94).
Ziyad Almaayouf and Juan Carlos Ramirez Garcia is scored a
majority draw after going the distance, judges scored the fight (57-57, 58-56,
57-57).
