In the co main event the vacant 559 Fights welterweight title is up for grabs as Madera's (2-1) Roman Guillen takes on Michael Ramirez. I was able to connect with Fresno's Michael "R1" Ramirez prior to his title fight Friday night in Visalia.
Ramirez is (2-1) as a amateur in MMA, and trains out of Dethrone in Fresno. "R1" started the year off with a impressive win by submission at 559 Fights 94 in January. I asked Ramirez how he has been doing and how training has been? he replied"I've been good, my training has been great. Learning a lot of new stuff. I’m working with my team, working on a little bit of everything with all of my coaches."
Ramirez faces Madera's (2-1) Roman Guillen for the vacant 559 Fights Welterweight title at 559 Fights 95. Guillen started his amateur career with two straight finishes before seeing a decision go the other way in his last outing at 559 fights 92. I asked Ramirez what he knew about his opponent and what it means to be fighting for the title at this stage in his career? he responded with,
"I’m feeling really grateful to have the opportunity to go out there and put all my hard work to the test. I don’t know much about him, but from the looks of it he seems like a really good wrestler. I’m grateful to have a opponent of his caliber to go against and test myself."
The question of "do you plan do go pro?" needs to be tossed out at this point for amateur fighters. Of course they do! That's like asking a college football player if he wants to make it to the NFL? Of course they do! So my next question for "R1" was, not looking past this fight. What are you future plans in your MMA journey? he stated,
I asked Ramirez if there was anyone he wanted to shout out? he finished with,
