Looking to bring one of those titles home to Visalia’s Tusk MMA at VFS 16 is Javier Zavala. 2-0 as an amateur in the lightweight division, Zavala will be competing for the VFS Amateur Lightweight Championship. Now making his home in Visalia California, Zavala was born in Moreno Valley where he graduated from Sierra Pacific High School in 2014. Zavala has been in the 559 for a few years now and it didn’t take long for him to find a new home to perfect his craft. Zavala Explains,

“I'm currently training at tusk MMA under Blake Marshall. I basically just moved to the area about two years ago, did some research on the gym, saw it was barely new, went in for sparring one day and the rest is history.”

Tusk MMA is owned and operated by Blake Marshall who is a black belt in Muay Thai under Master Rafael Cordeiro’s Kings MMA. Marshall is a long time trainer and also competed himself in 2015. For Zavala, outside of MMA he enjoys cooking and trying new foods, while playing softball when he can in his spare time. As far as what got him interested in the sport of Mixed Martial Arts. Zavala said,

“I got into MMA when I would watch Ronda Rousey and Connor McGregor at their peak, about 2014. Watching these guys was what led me to the sport.”

Talking to many amateur and professional fighters in my time, I kind of get a sense of how seriously they take the sport. Some fighters, coaches, and teams ignore the opportunity to get their names out, while fighters and coaches like Javier and Blake. Know it is essential to an athlete’s career to participate in media activities and even get good at them, if your planning on doing this sport for the long run. Coach Marshall reached out himself to get his fighter some “media training” in as he put it. That act shows the level of thinking and experience that is behind Tusk MMA. When asking Zavala about some of his goals in the sport? he responded,

“My goal for now is to win a championship belt and bring it back to Tusk MMA, as a way to say thank you. I'll only take it as far as my body lets me, but if I don't end up going far for whatever reason, I would definitely like to coach and train students in Martial Arts.”

Zavala was originally scheduled to face VFS Amateur Welterweight Champion who was coming down in weight in an attempt at becoming a two division champion. The fight fell through, and Zavala now takes on Galt California’s (3-3) Anthony Shelton for the amateur VFS Lightweight Championship. I asked Zavala how he felt about his new opponent and the title opportunity? He said,

“I feel really good about my opportunity, it’s all I've been asking for, for a while and definitely see myself accomplishing this goal. I know nothing about my opponent other than the fact that he has a respectable record. My message to him is thank you for showing up and keeping the show alive.”

Javier also wanted to let the Valley MMA community know,

“Expect a banger, I intend to utilize my hands a bit more. I’d like to thank the Central Valley fans for their support, if they don’t know my name yet, September 7 they will. Thank you Local 246 always for your sponsorship. Thank you, Tusk MMA family and all my coaches and people who have helped me, on this journey to the top.”

Tusk MMA also has Porterville’s George Aldaco on the card looking to move his record to 2-0 in his young amateur MMA journey. Aldaco takes on (0-0) Enrique Arroyo in a featherweight match up. Coach Blake Marshall leads his team in to battle September 7th and added,

“We’re fighting opponents from solid camps, we’re always up for the challenge. I feel incredibly confident heading into this upcoming event. These guys have been giving 110 percent every step of the way. I also want to thank our wrestling coach Anthony Ramirez, and our Jiu Jitsu coaches Mike Martinez and Michael San Nicholas for really making sure that these guys are ready for any phase of the fight and helping push them through this camp.”
