The Central Valley’s own Cody “The Renegade” Gibson was back
inside the octagon on the preliminary portion of UFC Fight Night: Moreno vs
Albazi. The bout which aired live on ESPN+, was Gibson’s third fight with the
promotion since making it to the finals of the Ultimate Fighter Season 31.
Gibson picked up a submission win in his last outing at UFC Fight Night in July
and looked to finish the year off strong. Traveling to Canada to take on their
own (13-7) Chad Anheliger.
Gibson used great foot work in round one cutting the distance where then pushed Anheliger along the cage and secured a takedown. Gibson worked his way to Anheliger’s back where he looked to set up a rear naked choke. Anheliger would get back to a safer position but had to fend off a few submissions from Gibson before the round was over. Gibson took the fight to the ground immediately in round two, taking Anaheliger’s back again where he locked up a body triangle. Now landing some hard shots, Gibson mixed in some elbows from full mount while looking for head and arm triangle choke.
Anheliger would
survive and make it back to his feet before the round ended. The Canadian Anheliger
would get the hometown crown excited in round three when he threw a few punches,
but Gibson quieted the crowd getting the fight to the ground again. Gibson was
able to control the last round with his wrestling to the final bell sending the
fight to the judges. Where judges scored the fight (30-27, 30-27, 30-26), all
in favor of Gibson with one judge scoring one of the early rounds 10-8 for Gibson.
“The Renegade” picks up his 21st win as a professional with the dominant
performance and is now on a two fight win streak in the UFC.
