The Golden Boy Promotions team got right to work before that, hitting the packing house in Fowler, Ca. Where they were able to visit with some farm workers from the community. De la Hoya spoke about the experience at the press conference saying,
"Today I had the opportunity to connect with a few farm workers, it was such an experience. You get to know the people, you really appreciate exactly what they do and where our food comes from, where the fruits come from. The whole process was just incredible, it was amazing. I was really moved by all the hard work that's put into making sure that the world is fed basically, and it starts here. We literally are blessed to be here, to be able to stage such a wonderful event for everyone that loves boxing."
The Central Valley definitely loves their boxing along with all combat sports. The Save Mart Center has housed some big time fight events before, so the Valley knows what to expect when it comes to top level boxing. There is a lot of excitement in the air with the news of Avenal's Jose Ramirez signing on with Golden Boy Promotions. Ramirez, who has had all of The Valley's support since day one will compete in the main event of the night. De La Hoya spoke on the co main and main event competitors saying,
(28-1) Jose Ramirez will take on Cuba's (30-2) Rances Barthelemy in the main event. (20-0) Vergil Ortiz Jr will take on (25-6) Thomas Dulorme in the co main event. During the press conference it was announced that Golden Boy Promotions has set aside three thousand ticket vouchers for Central California Farm workers to attend the event.
"It'll be special" said De La Hoya, "because all those people that are working out in the fields, most of them will be inside this arena cheering for their favorite fighters. To me, to be able to stage such a huge event on a global scale. Brings a lot of honor, a lot of honor to what I started twenty two years ago."
De La Hoya seemed to have not only seen, but felt what the Central Valley is all about. Pride and Honor were a few words "The Golden Boy" used many times while describing the area. De La Hoya mentioned the workers, farm owners, and even visited some of the medical facilities that help the farm workers saying, "It is special, not everybody does that. Happy workers, happy people, you produce more. You work like a machine, that's exactly what it is, it's a machine that really really cares."
"Being here in Fresno is a very special treat, because we know how important this event can be to the next generation. To the generation that's hard working in the fields and to everyone involved."
